They’re a tiny, quirky bunch with a lot of deep knowledge, a lot of passion, and now a lot of weird photo evidence, detailed in this post.
While our CHEAP TOMS SHOES team was on its Giving Trip in Cambodia this past Fall, they had the opportunity to visit some of these communities with Seva. Among our friends was Zac, from the Los Angeles-based band Dengue Fever. Most of the blindness in Cambodia is either preventable or curable, but because of barriers — both in terms of awareness and of geography — many people lack access to quality, affordable eye care. To sustainably meet the needs of the people it intends to serve, Seva supports the training of local ophthalmologists, ophthalmic nurses, fieldworkers and school teachers. But, even still, its staff faces the challenge of finding the rural people who would most benefit from the services it provides. In the communities on the outskirts of where the Seva eye hospitals are located, people in need struggle to find transportation to where they can receive eye care.
He continued, “Just like simple stuff…being able to read the newspaper; being able to see who is walking by and passing you on the road; and being able to say hello to people. When your world gets limited to four feet in front of you, and then two feet in front of you, and then just…nothing, [restored vision is] going to open the world back up.”can helping rebuild Cambodia’s eye care infrastructure, Seva recognized the need, and committed to bringing essential eye care services to Cambodia’s most vulnerable populations.
